This house is part of a special piece of urban development in Utrecht. The urban design for the Wisselspoor district was created by Studioninedots under the title: 'Stoer Stukkie Stad' and the bold development is by Synchroon.
The Wisselspoor development is based on the Cityplot urban planning concept of Studioninedots. Cityplot proposes compact, flexible city blocks composed of small-scale, mixed-use developments with different typologies, users and functions. This concept allows for diversity and collectivity in the neighbourhood as demanded by today's urban residents. This house is part of a number of self-build plots.
For the design of the house on this compact plot, spaciousness in the interior and flexibility in the layout - both now and in the future - were important starting points. The stairwell is located centrally in the house, dividing the floor plan spatially into two on each floor. Thanks to this spatial division, the floor plan remains flexible.
The stairwell with its voids creates a lot of spaciousness in the rather narrow house. On the ground and first floor are the living spaces. On the floors above are the bedrooms and bathroom, and the top floor is the children's/play area. The facade looks sturdy with its deep recesses and large windows. The windows stagger from top to bottom and the large size of the windows means that only one window w per floor is needed.
